At first only the cab and bed were painted body color (which included Black) and the fenders and running boards were painted Black. In later years you could get the fenders painted body color (including Black). By the mid sixties this was the standard practice as shown in the catalogs of those years. By the way, the dash of WM300s with padded dash were painted Black. The engine compartment is body color.

You could also special order a color, particularly for fleet sales. I once talked to a guy who had a beautiful 1940/41 one-ton Dodge truck painted "Safety Orange". He said his dad special ordered the color from the factory for his plumbing trucks. In these cases, it's likely they painted over an already painted truck.

Check the inside of the wiper motor covers or glove box for original color.
