I just replaced my pinion seal. I asked this same type of question. I was told to torque the nut close to the 300ft lbs that the manual states. If you have swapped out your gears or have a previously rebuilt unit, then your toque specs will be different.

Now if you havent't replaced a seal before, I'll give you a couple tips. 1. Use a slide hammer to get the seal out. Drill two 1.4 in holes. Tap them to fit a matchin bolt. Insert bolt, tap it a few times, then remove and install in the second hole and do the same thing. I did this and had my seal out within six taps. 2. You will not be able to torque that nut unless you immobilize the differential. Locking the truck into 4WD won't do. Go to home depot and buy a piece of 1/4in barstock, drill a couple holes to mate it up with the companion flange, and grind or drill a hole for the companion nut socket. When you go to tighten the nut, attach the bar to the flange, then allow it to rest on the floor, or against the frame, etc. This way you will be able to get the proper resistence to allow your torque wrench to break. I borrowed a guy's wrench that went to 250 ftlbs. After it broke at 250, I then put a breaker bar on the nut and gave it just a tad more. I figure I have mine torqued to about 275 ft lbs, which is sufficient from what I have been told.
