If it floats, and is squashed, it makes me think it leaks? When heated, air left, then when cooled less air inside shrunk, and collapsed it? I doubt if anything in the crankcase would hit it. As I recall, mine was collapsed too.

It's purpose was to float on top of the oil and not pick up the gunk what sunk.
If you use modern oil I doubt if a floater will help any. And a floater has a built in leak at the pivot- I'd braze up the pivot and run it- if it's clean inside.
