It's nice to have a lively debate about something other than politics. I'll definitely save that vacuum gage reference. I tend to just set the timing by advancing it until it just starts to knock under load, and then back off a bit.

I've often thought it would be nice to have a manual timing control I could work while driving. Would probably do wonders for gas mileage to be able to advance the timing way up while cruising at steady speed and light load. As I recall, the Model A's had a lever on the steering column to do just that. You could retard the timing for easy starting, then advance it as far as possible based on the type of fuel being used and the load conditions.
