The setup you describe has been done with success. My M37 happened to have a Brand X 400 v8, a TH400 automatic, power steering, 36x12.50 Swamper radials, stock drum brakes with a vacuum booster, stock gearing and stock transfer case. I was very impressed with its offroad capabilities, which around here means woods trails with rocks and mud.
