Production decisions are always compromises. If Dodge had 100,000 offcenter housings, stacked up in 1945, but only 3,000 centered ones, which one would you decide to use?
Or another posible answer to the $64,000 question: Don't the front and rear axle housing castings match? Same offset? One mold, zillions of castings, different ends welded on for front or rear??? I'll have to go look under my truck....
