I always use a clear plastic (vinyl) hose 8 feet long to syphon gas, it is safer cause you see the fuel flowing befire it gets in your mouth. It also works like a water level, the gas will find it's own level. Blow into hose as you insert it, you'll hear bubbles when it gets into gas. Just start the syphon with a loop to ground, hold end up above tank, gas finds it's own level, then hold hose against tank and guesstimate 1/8 or 3/4 of a tank.
