Yes mike, you have hit the nail on the head. They did not design the driveshaft to attach to the upper output location because this would have forced the driveline to operate at a greater angle and would have lead to a reduced life expectancy of the u-joints. Not to mention the transfer case and differential bearings that start to suffer when u-joints wear out and vibrations set in.
