Some say that all the M37s used the industrial version of the engine, which came stock with hardened (stellite?) valve seats, whereas the non-industrial engine, such as was used in Plymouth cars, just had the valve seats ground into the block. Some say the hardened valve seats make the engine last just as long on unleaded gas as on leaded gas. I'm not enough of an authority to say for sure either way, but it makes sense to me that for the tiny difference in price of the engine, the army would want the ability to run on any type of gasoline available anywhere in the world. Even in the 1950s there was "unleaded" gas, it was just called "white gas".
