If I were to guess, I would say that
1. The cab and runningboards were designed to be able to carry troops, maybe unofficially, but nevertheless to carry them. The narrow cab design was simply to accomodate the runningboards and the fenders just finished the design with a needed element.
2. 230 was choosen because of its simplicity and standardization of motors heading into a war. Easy availability of parts, and easy interchange between vehicles. Lastly Proven durability.
3. Gearing was choosen because of the motor selection and the Army requirement for a powerful machine not needing speeds in excess of 45mph.
4. Wood bed, steel shortage, easy to damage, easy to replace, easily modifiable.

Just some guesses. I do enjoy hearing everybodies opinions on why they did this, and what is it to each of us that makes the truck special.
