They were a neat little engine until they hit the 100k mile mark, then parts would turn to shrapnel. The 1100 series had the older and somewhat better compact injection pump but was never equipped with a turbo and came in 3 displacement sizes. In the mid 70's Cat changed to the sleeve meter injection pump and then it became the 3208. Most of these engines smoked a bit until they got good and hot due to having 2 piston rings. A turbo hooked to a 1160 would make for a short but interesting experiment. Now if you could stumble across a late model 3208T that isn't close to the century mark buy it! These engines could make lots of power with the proper components...435hp in marine pleasurecraft with seawater aftercooler. The max rpm's varied from 2500 to 3000 but they have been known to turn 4800 in drag racing applications. Nothing sounds like a 3208 with open headers at full rpm after a shot of nitrous/propane.
