Speedometer Question?

I have a mechanical VDO speedometer in my M37. When I replaced the cable there was a small "gear box" of some type on the t-case. It was locked up so I removed it from the circuit. I checked the speedometer for needle movement, but now that it is all back together, the needle does not register. My thought was that the "gearbox" is a reverser. Do some speedometers read in a different direction than others? Do you know of a source for the gearbox?
