Adaware works well for what it's designed for, and so does Spybot. Adaware searches for some spyware and adware of particular types, and you can update it almost daily with new definition files. Many of these malicious programs are old stuff, but there are plenty of sites still using them. As far as the rest, your software is only as good as your most recent update!

Spybot has a newer program called Spybot Advanced Search and Destroy, which is much more aggressive than the older versions. It works, but you must stay on top of your updates for it to be effective. If you just load a copy you've had laying around for a few months it's entirely out of date!

There's another freeware program that effectively blocks a whole bunch of spyware from ever being loaded: Spyware Blaster. It has an update link to keep it current, and it works.

With Spyware Blaster in place to block, and Spybot Search and Destroy Advanced, and Adaware, and all of them updated regularly, you have protection. Complete protection? No, because as I write this there's a couple of dozen people writing malicious code somewhere....

I am not familiar with the other program mentioned at $29.95, because I can't afford anything but the free stuff right now!

By the way: I will purchase the 'Pro' versions of all of my freeware as soon as I am able, because I don't think it is intended to be used for free for the rest of your life! Somebody worked hard to build it, so I'll pay them for their work. It could be that the programs that were tested and which failed were the free versions, and not the paid versions? To give a fair assessment put the paid versions against the paid versions, as the paid versions have many more features.

A firewall is critical. If you want to test your system's firewall go to Gibson Research and it will test your machine for you online.
