I read a most interesting description of the 'proper way' to start a long abandoned engine. It was on another forum I believe, but I might be able to drag up a link. It might have even been here if sombody has a keener memory and can remember?

In short the idea was this: after attending to the obvious details of checking all systems to whatever extent is possible and cleaning the carb and setting up for spark, fill the engine with oil. No, not 4 quarts plus the filter: FILL the engine with oil, like up 7/8 of the way on the dipstick!

Use that el cheapo stuff in gallon jugs, and leave it sit for a day or two. Next drain it out, and let it drain well, then refill to the normal specification level with the same oil. Start the engine and run at 2,000 rpm for about 20 minutes to lube the camshaft bearings and lifters. Run it with this oil for a couple of days then drain it out, change the filter, and refill with some more of the leftover cheap oil. Drive it for a week or two, then drain thoroughly, put on a new filter, and refill with top grade lubricant.

Filling the entire engine pre-lubes all bearings and wear surfaces, loosens harmful deposits and coats piston skirts, cylinders etc. with protective film before first startup. Also this process soaks all gaskets with oil for a day or two, causing them to swell and helping to prevent leaks at startup.

This method sure made a lot of sense to me.....
