Sean;

I recently tore apart an early 3/4 T carryall rear axle. I noticed that it had smaller diameter studs holding the differential on than did my later 3/4 T carryall. The differentials in both were identical in that they both had the mounting holes to fit the larger studs. The early axle had short steel sleves over the studs to make up for smaller stud size. It seems to have worked just fine.

Another option is to drill out and tap the axle housing to accept the larger studs. My recommendation is to use copper or steel sleves to make up for the diameter diffrence. I do not see any more possibility of shearing off the smaller studs than the larger ones.
