If you give up on the "re-engineer from the frame up" concept, and if your off-road use is 25 miles or less from home, then try this:
38.5X11.00-16 Boggers on stock rims, gives you top speed of 60, cruise speed of 48-50 at 25-2600.
Rear Lockright - front not a good idea without power steering
only do disk brakes if brakes are shot; there are M37s with good brakes; my WC53 has great stock brakes
There you are: a very competent trail rig, for $1100 in parts.
