Sean,
If you are going to make the blocks 6" long then the correct thickness difference is .315" (about 5/16"). Yes the thinner end of the block goes towards the front. The idea is to tilt the axis of the kingpins back at the top like the forks on a bicycle. This makes the wheels naturally track straight down the road. Is an inch and a half enough to ensure you wont hit the oil pan when your springs compress? Good luck.
