Gordon:

Your question asked which model truck should be considered for a Project X treatment. I vote for the M-37 for the following reasons: It is the cheapest and most plentiful truck of the three candidates; many non-running and parts M-37's are available in every state (worldwide) for conversion; stock parts are common and not yet all that expensive; adoptable parts like power steering are also readily available; they are excellent trail trucks with a nice ride using stock axles; they have plently of room under the hood; they can be meaningfully upgraded easily with a different engine, transmission, brakes and power steering while keeping the stock transfer case and axles on the first upgrade; there are many nice yet different conversions already in existence, showing M-37 upgrades can be done with relative ease.

The old 1 ton Power Wagons are cramped under the hood and are difficult to adopt power steering to. There were not enough W300's built to make it a common truck available to a broad base of readers.

We had 3 M-37's at our Rendezvous do the toughest trails. One had a 360, disc brakes, power steering and 900-16 radial tires; another had a Perkins 4 cylinder diesel, stock drive train and 1100-16 LAV tires; the third was dead bone stock with all season radials. Three different approaches but all successfully completed this year's toughest trails.

In summary, the M-37 is the most available, most adoptable, most common and most versatile. It offer the broadest possibilities for various types of build-ups, maximizing reader relevance. Use it for Project X. That's my $0.02.
