Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am fairly certain that the "small block" flathead (ie. 218, 230)head measures 23" and the large block (251, 265) measures over 24", closer to 25. My best guess is a 1952 would be a 218 or most likely a 230.
I have heard of .100 over pistons being manufactured for these engines.
