Lyle is quite correct as usual. One of my other careers was as an electric car dealer. We had battery packs as large as 20 six volt GC2 batteries configured in both series and series/parallel switching modes. Even though I made my current connections away from the battery pack, I had a battery explode in my face as I looked into an opened cell to check fluid level. I was not wearing any face or eye protection. Fourtunately my previous career was 20 years as a chemist so I knew how to quickly deal with the acid in my eyes. I was lucky as I avoided injury. To this day I have no idea what sparked the battery exhaust fumes. In my whole life I have seen 3 lead acid batteries explode while being charged. The other two times were when someone else was disconnecting charger leads at the battery without turning off the charger. Safety first. Bob
