Charge questions???

I have a 48' B-1 that has been converted to 12v with alternator and points style regulator, it also has an idiot light instead of the gauge that used to be there. the regulator looks almost identical to the one on my wife's 65' Ford I.E. two contact points instead of the three point style that was on there originally. It had been working fine until last night I went for a short ride, when I got back to the house the idiot light was fluttering on and off. I'm assuming that the problem lies with the regulator, and my lack of knowledge on how to adjust it correctly. Could anyone tell me how to adjust one of these, and or do you have to file the contacts occasionally to keep it working correctly???
