Gordon The injury is called "crush syndrome"
it can occur in as little as one hour and it doesn't take a massive injury to be fatal. The mechanism of injury acts like a "tourniquet" preventing blood flow...the blood that isn't moving begins to aquire impurities that build up become toxic and can not be adequatley filterd. Once the compression or "crush" is removed this toxic blood re-enters the system and causes rapid death. Depending on accessability of the victim, the lenght of time of entrapment and the level of care provided at the scene as well as transport time determines survivability. Even the best medical team doesn't always prevail positively. Tragedies will always occur the best that can be hoped from them are the lessons that are learned and passed on. Steve
