Dodge's new "Farm Uitility Truck", later known as "General Purpose Truck", and finally known as the POWER-WAGON, was initially only being offered in one body style and one wheelbase. So, it did not need a special number designation following the WD (W = series, D = 1-ton). It did, however, need a unique character to designate it as 4-wheel drive and to distinguish it from the other WD trucks. What better way to do so than to use the simple letter "X". The four legs of the X begin at a single point that represents the transfer case unique to the truck. From there, each of the four legs extend outward, each terminating at their own point in space. These points represent the four driven wheels unique to the truck.

And now, you know the rest of the story. ;^)
