If it is a lead-acid battery then baking soda would neutralize the acid, if an alkaline battery you would use acid to neutralize the alkaline, but would probably leave an acid residue unless you got the proportions exactly correct, so just clean real good alkaline residue won't corrode like acid. If a NI-MH, I don't know what to use. Perhaps a call to customer service at the battery manufacturer for their recommendations and then post the answer for the rest of us.
