The military/ GM put in 2 alternators, each is 12 volts with separate ground lugs. Each is hooked to it's own battery, though the batterys have a cable between them. Since each battery has it's own alt, it is OK to draw power from each individually. Only one bat is neg grounded, so take most accessories off it, the other would need to keep neg sepately connected.
