Law enforcement is just that.

Whatever/whoever enforces the law in your area, be it a township, city, county or whatever, has some kind of Fraud Detail or Bunko that deals with these specific things. Sherrif's uniforms are easy to rent from movie costumers, and some guys have a brother in law or somesuch that's an unscrupulous lawman.

No matter what, you acted in good faith and broke no law. Sounds like someone is banking that you will feel guilty, want to keep the cops out of it, and follow along with instructions. Instead, LET YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT DO THEIR JOB!

Call the local agency, sherrif or constable or police, and toss it all to them, with all of the facts written down as previously suggested. Receiving stolen property is far different from BUYING property that is not known to be stolen. You are not guilty of any crime at this point. Don't call this supposed 'sherrif' again. CALL YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND LET THEM HANDLE IT!

Even call your local District Attorney as well, because they may be very interested in this whole matter and are the agency that would press charges against any fraud. The point is, stand up like a decent and law abiding citizen who is outraged! That puts the ball in your court.

By the way: that supposed 'sherrif' should have given you a very official business card from the sherrif's office showing point of contact, so, did he?
