If you havent heard from them in a year, I would'nt worry about it too much. Just start the process to get a title for it.
This is how it works in Washington State:
1) Buy truck with no title.
2) Go to DMV and get paperwork to establish title. They will run the VIN # and tell you who last titled the vehicle if anyone.
3) take paperwork and truck to the local state patrol office and show them where the VIN # is on the frame. They will then certify this on the paperwork.
4) Back to DMV with the paperwork. There you will put the truck in the system with the VIN #. You will be issued a 3 year registration only. At the end of the 3 years, the state will issue you a new title for the truck.
The 3 year period gives a statute of limitations for someone to make a claim on the truck, only if they have solid proof of ownership, ie: a title with the correct VIN# on it.
I have had to do this with a couple of Power Wagons, because they were given a VIN# using the engine # instead of the proper VIN#. The state is aware of this on older vehicles, and are pretty good about changing to the correct VIN# and reissuing the title.
