Differential Noise

When I spun the rear differential on my WM300 you could hear a loud "click, click, click" sound in either direction. I pulled the axle shafts and removed the carrier. After cleaning some sludge and rusty metal particles from the housing (mostly primer and surface rust from moisture inside the housing very few fine silver metal flakes) I took a look at the differential. The ring and pinion look really good. Better than any others I've opened up. Almost no wear and just a trace of surface rust on a few teeth.

Now, when I spin the yoke without the axle shafts inserted there is no sound at all. Here's the question. Do the shafts provide resistence that engages the internal spider gears or something that I can't see just on visual inspection? I know I can test it out by reinstalling the carrier and the axle shafts, but was hoping someone could tell me. Even though everything looks and sounds good I don't want to put it back together just to learn I have missed something completely.

Also, when you reinstall the carrier, do you use a gasket or sealer or both?

Thanks for any help.
