early and late model PTOs ?

It seems like, but I'm not sure, that I once heard, there was a difference in the early PTOs that was used on the early WDX and B-1&2
PWs with non-sync. trannies and the later sync. trannies used in the B-3 thru WM300s..
Is this true and if so, what would that difference be ? Thanks,
