In Iowa, if your life is being threatened, or the life of another person, or if you feel you have to "flee the safety of your domicile" to prevent serious injury or to save your life, it is legal to use deadly force.
The "flee your domicile" aspect is important and can be critical.
I don't argue the logic in the Texas law rooted in horse theft. If a harder line was taken with thieves, we would have fewer of them.
Having said that, one way it was explained to me by an instructor here who does concealed weapons permit training is that if an intruder is in your house running with your television, you can't shoot him unless he is running toward you in what you perceive as a threatening manner. Otherwise, you just let him go with your television.
