...if you just wound someone, you're liable for never ending lawsuits, intimidation and stalking in the future. Unfortunate to say, but if you shoot, shoot to kill. No opposing party left to testify, less chance of a lawsuit and, in most cases, less chance of retribution. If they are under 21 you certainly do not want to have to shoot them, and you might scare them straight. If they are over 21 you would most likely be doing yourself and your community a favor.
Bottom line, no bird shot and aside from intimidation and messy amputation, a shotgun is too unwieldy to manuver in haste unless it is a short barrel 'defender' model. A 44 or 45, whatever it takes, is a good alarm system. I 've had big dogs poisioned and drugged by professional thieves, but a stupid little 'yippie' dog that never shuts up is a good deterent,...along with that Python.
