Ignition switches with a separate "accessory" position, when wired properly, send voltage only to devices wired to that terminal of the switch.
When the key is turned the other way (to the "IGN" or "ON" position), voltage is sent to the accessories AND the ignition coil circuit (hot, thru resistor, if equipped, coil, points, ground).
So your coil should never be energized when the key is turned to "accessory". To test this, turn the key to ACC and put a test lamp on the hot side of the coil. The lamp should NOT light up. Turn the key to "ON" and the lamp should light up.
