One drawback to considering a winch to be an ornament is that safely and effectively using them does require some practice and experience. If you ever then do use it, you may find it does not work as you had imagined, and you may get badly injured trying to use it. Also, a winch alone is often not enough to do the job. You often need shackles, straps, snatch blocks, line weights, etc, and need to be familar with this stuff by using it together as a system.

A few weeks ago I drove up to the rim of the Independence Trail in Penrose, CO. Got out of my M37 and walked over to the trail, just in time to see a Toyota tube buggy go off the vertical 5' ledge which is the start of the trail (this is a very radical and difficult 4x4 trail) and roll onto his top. I ran back to my truck, spooled out the cable and pulled him back shiny side up.
