There's 3 different 8 3/4 and I think only the 741 has weak spiders. 742 and 489 are VERY stout pieces, and clutch-type limited slip from a 742 casting is an excellent setup; also you can still rebuild that one with kits from Mancini. The 489 casting uses an Auburn, which is not practical to rebuild, but you can buy a new Auburn $$$ if you want.
