I live on the line and in an ajoining rural county to the largest pop. metro county in the state. The only access is from the metro county. The 3-way intersection has a large yellow DEAD END sign posted at the small
(almost one lane) tar and gravel road that leads to my property. It is approx. 1/2 mi. from there to the county line and my property, with nothing but woods on either side except for a small pasture just before my place. There are NO TRESPASSING and NO HUNTING signs all along the way. At the line the road definately becomes a one-lane road for approx. 1/4 mi. dividing some of my property to a dead end. It is all technically a public road BUT, the only people who really have any business down this road are myself and the few property owners that own land beyond it but never use it. There is a gate at the dead end which stops progress down the old roadbed that is technically a non-maintained county ROW and comes out approx. 2-1/2 mi. away and there is a gate at that end also. So you see we land owners want to keep people out of this roughly 2-1/2 X 2 mi. prime deer, turkey habitat where a few small black bear and a wandering mt.lion reside also. The county DOT told us we could block off each end like that (yrs back)as long as the property owners had access to their prop. Had we not had done this, there would be dirtbikes,4-wheelers, dune buggies, 4X4s ripping the landside to shreds not to mention all the dumping that would start. And truthfully, my neighbor and myself both moved out here years ago to get away to a fresh, quiet place and resent all the developers and towners trying to turn the country into the suburbs.I guess we're the private hermit type but,not anti-social,we just like our privacy.
This is the infamous ,
Layfield Hollow(pronouced-holl'r) obtained through a Louisiana Land Grant, where signs warned Trespassers to KEEP OUT and loads of
moonshine was made and the local motto was Revenuers BEWARE! No Layfields live or own property here as of a few yrs ago. The large tracts have all changed hands and sit for the heirs of future generations to walk and hunt in. The only exception we make is the boyscouts and saddle clubs, at least they show respect for the land and enjoy the quiet solitude out here. Nosey strangers upset our piece of mind and who knows whos just being nosey and who the thieves are?
