Very good comment about "complicated overthought systems with poor reliability". That's been my impression of every piece of "British engineering" I've ever had to work on, from a Vauxhall car to a fancy piece of electronic test equipment with 5 computers inside it. They seem to take inordinate pride in making things fancy and fussy, and tend to lose sight of whatever it is that the machine was originally supposed to do. And need I mention the name "Lucas"?

As far as Rovers, another big marketing coup of theirs seemed to be that every National Geographic article involving an adventure in a distant land in the 1950s and 60s used a Rover. Reading through all these article, the only mention of a PW would be on the rare occasion when they would get hopelessly stuck, a "Dodge Powerwagon", usually belonging to an oil company or mining company, would happen along and pull them out.
