Hi Paul,
The 318A or Poly, was Chryslers second V-8 engine family after the Hemi. It was an attempt to lower production costs and still get the performance of the Hemi. The Poly has equal length intake and exhaust runners, but only one row of rockers which results in the canted valves and scolloped valve covers. The 318LA is a wedge motor series which includes the 273, 318, 340 and 360 displacements. They are good motors when compared to motors from gm and ferd, but they do not have the potential of the Poly. The Polys downside is that it was discontinued in 1967 and there are only a few folks building aftermarket equipment for them. Many Dodge owners are not aware of what a diamond in the rough they have and scrap the Poly in favor of the LA, because the LA series is so plentiful and there are many, many aftermarket parts available for them.
