Running 6V heater on 12V

Has anyone run a 6V heater motor on 12V long-term? The heater in my sno-cat appears to be the same one as in the pilot-house Dodges. It has a 6V heater motor with a dropping resistor in series with it (the cat was converted to 12V and has an alternator). The fan is barely strong enough to defog the windshield let alone heat the cab. I've upped the voltage a few volts by using a lower resistance and the motor does not seem to be getting hot. I'm wondering about just going all the way and hooking it to 12V. My goal is to get more heat, so swapping in a 12V motor would defeat the purpose of it. I suppose it's possible that it IS a 12V motor and somebody just thought it was 6V and cobbled in the resistor unnecessarily.
