It seems like we're heading for nationwide standardized testing like they have in those other countries. Under the guise of improving the schools, testing allows the government to decide who gets to progress to various "advanced" schools and ultimately what jobs they can get. The "conservatives" push standardized testing and have even talked about trying to get more children on psych drugs, while the "liberals" are scared of letting kids do anything connected with physical reality, and would rather produce high-school graduates who are utterly incompetent to do anything useful but have "good self esteem", than people who worked hard on something interesting and difficult, did a good job on it, and are proud of themselves for their accomplishment.

I would say get the feds out of our schools and return control to the local school boards, but even they seem to be most concerned about whatever angry parent most recently yelled at them for making her kid study.

A while back I had a friend's son come and stay with me at my cabin while I was building a machinery shed. When he went home he complained "All he does is get up in the morning at start working right away before I've even woken up". Yeah, kid, that's how all this stuff you see in this world you're going to inherit got there. People got up in the morning and went to work. What a concept, dude.
