are about the only "play" that's considered save enough for kids these days. No wonder they're getting fat. Friend of mine's kid got expelled for 6 weeks for having a pocket knife in school! When I was a kid, all the boys had pocket knives. I made a stink bomb out of a science project and they evacuated the school until it aired out but nobody called the haz-mat squad and I didn't get expelled. A couple other boys and I would experiment with homemade gunpowder and bring our creations to school to try out at recess behind the old church. If some kid did that now it'd be a suspected terrorist incident on the evening news, the boys involved would not only be expelled but they'd probably be sent to a shrink for years of counselling about their violent tendencies, and they'd probably make sure that the smartest kids in the class never had access to anything scientific again. It's a lousy age to be a boy who's actually smart and curious and interested in learning about real stuff.
