The early WCs used a smaller ring gear with a two pinions instead of four. The spline count and axle diameter are the same.

The early housings had removable inspection covers, where the later housings have the covers welded in place. The later carrier can be used in an early axle by stacking 3 gaskets between the housing and the carrier. This was the military procedure for replacing failed units with the newer carriers.

The later carrier can also be indentified by a set screw on the pinion bearing. The early carriers do not have this set screw.

My Carryall had the later style axles installed during a depot rebuild in 1953. They carry metal tags telling mechanics not to use three gaskets as described in the WWII Technical Manual.
