Before adjusting, I'd like to know what the conditions are? Is he trying to disengage while there is still a load on the case? All early cases are hard to shift if there is a load or pressure on the gears. Has he put the truck on a smooth flat surface, disengaged the clutch and then tried to shift? Is he in neutral? Are his fronts wheels straight ahead? Is he rolling at 1-2 mph? There are many reasons while the case will not shift, the detent balls may be a factor, but that may, or could, also make it hard to shift into 4WD. If he has already tried the above, THEN go ahead and check the adjustment.
