The cam drives the pump and the pump drives the dist. If the slot in the oil pump is off at TDC the rotor will be out of relation and in some cases you can't turn the dist. far enough with out hitting something. Then people start jumping wires on the cap[I'm as guilty as the rest]. If I rember right you install the oil pump with engine @ TDC and when pump is bolted up, drive slot should be parellel with the cam/crank. Check your manual to be sure. John
