Why did the M37 use an offset differential?

It is interesting to me that Dodge never offered the centered rear differential in the Power Wagon. Since few trucks actually had rear PTO, you'd think they would have realized the benefit of running the driveshaft off the center t-case output.

Toyota Land Cruisers, some Land Rovers and Jeeps had offset rear differentials. Were these because of transfer case design?
