Identifying ground on a 1957 K6 W300

I have a problem in identifying whether my 1957 K6 W300 is a positive or negative ground system. The battery was removed from the vehicle prior to my ownership. Judging from the size of the openings in the battery cables, it appears that it is a negative ground. However, the manual says that these were positive grounds. Does anyone out there have a way to tell which it should be? This vehicle was used as a brush fire truck and is outfitted with a custom fire truck body, lights, sirens. Could it have been switched from positive ground to negative ground. What can I damage if I connect it improperly? Thanks for your help. Steve
