The cable is 47 years old, I dont blame it for breaking. I am not the first person to put a strain on it! The pulley is about a 10" diameter. Setting up a pulley, and then running the cable back to the truck will double the pull. I suspect that made the cable the weak link, not to mention the fact that it is an old cable. Notwithstanding the age, it isnt in terrible shape and is not ready for the scrap bin.
My backhoe took care of the stumps, but it leaves a much larger crater than if the stumps can be pulled. I think I will pass on Jonas's suggestion of the explosives. My local Home Cheepo does not carry them anyway.
