From what I have seen of the gear ratios in the manuals etc, 1st gear is a 'creeper gear' and it was 2nd and 3rd gear or 3rd or 4th gear that was close together. Or , some 5 speeds are overdrive tranmissions as well. The gearing varies from model to model and type etc. But the average truck HD 4 speed or HD 5 speed is not a close ratio for 1st to 2nd. Alot of them have the extra gear in the middl range gears to make the shifts less far apart to keep the RPM from dropping thus making more power and keep from lugging the engine between shifts.

As for the NP435 being a decendant of a 5 speed NP540, I HIGLY doubt that, as the case looks much different from a NP540 or NP433 4 speed, they are not as big.
