Hi Rob,
That '68 tranny may be slightly oddball...in '67 a special NP-435 was built with a wide ratio 2-3 and close ratio 3-4, such that 3rd is like a highway passing gear. That is a model DA27B, visible on the side-plate tag on tranny.

'67-'68 has synchro 2-3-4, as do all later years. DA27B has dual PTO covers and uses a Chelsea 535 PTO as I recall.

That DA27B tranny could have been used in the '68 even though it's a '67 tranny. They're okay for normal driving, but for towing it can be a problem if the hill gets too steep for 3rd, cause it's a long way down to 2nd!

Late 60's NP-435 input shaft should be roughly 9" in length from back of bearing support housing [against gaskets at trans front] to shaft forward tip, where 420 may be 7.50" or other. Input shaft end-play is adjusted by add/remove gaskets at housing; and PTO is adjuted by add/remove gasket at PTO mounting to trans.

You can change input shafts, but the shaft gear teeth must be the same count as on old shaft as they mesh with a gear inside trans. This series of trans was used on Chevy, Dodge, Ford, International and possibly others, from the '60's to the late '80's, so parts are plentiful. Very stout transmission.
