Coil is hot both sides, gets juice THROUGH it's windings. When points close, the - side is grounded= no volts. Points have to open, and also close. When closed, circuit is complete, electricity flows to ground. When they open, the magnetic field collapses, and just like moving a coil through a magnetic field, the secondary coil makes electricity- 10,000 volts of it. The condenser also helps- when the points open, it sends a jolt back up the line, making a stronger field to then collapse. Point gap is about the thickness of a matchbook cover- too wide won't rev hi, to close is hard to start. Dual points allow longer time closed- it is while points are closed that the magnetic field builds, longer close time, bigger field at high revs, good spark when field collapses.
