I have been using Zone Alarm, AVG anti-virus, Spybot and Adaware, plus some other more agressive programs for quite some time. All of those mentioned are free to download. Adaware gets some bugs that Spybot misses, and Spybot gets some that Adaware misses, and together they are great. One of those, Spybot or Adaware, has an 'Immunization' program in it that blocks particular spyware, and which is user configurable.
Zone Alarm is impenetrable when properly configured, and AVG has daily updates for virus protection if you want them, which I do! The price is right, too.
